La Plata Canyon Jeep Trail Tour
The La Plata Mountains are visible from Mesa Verde National Park. They are the southern most part of the San Juan Mountains with a jeep trail going right through the middle of them up to Kennebec Pass, almost 12,000 feet high in elevation. Here the road intersects the Colorado Trail and provides sweeping views of the northern San Juans, Durango, and the area to south around Mesa Verde. The history in the La Platas runs rich with mining, containing several mines that are still active today. There are numerous Forest Service camping opportunities and great hikes throughout the canyon.
Durango has professional outfitters that provide guided tours in the canyon. They use fun open-air tour vehicles and the guides are well versed in the history of the area. Learn more about the La Plata Canyon Jeep Trail Tour.
You can venture into La Plata Canyon on your own with a high clearance 4×4 vehicle. The lower canyon is fairly smooth dirt road but as you begin to climb the road gets rougher. Forest Service Map.
